Laughter is The BEST MEDICINE, Science confirms IT

Laughter is The BEST MEDICINE, Science confirms IT

Laughter is the best medicine, Proverbs quote, ” a merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones”. I was thinking about laughter and came across an article in “Psychology Today”, which goes into all the science of how laughter heals the body and spirit and helps people live and work together.

You do not have to believe in the Bible to believe there is a lot of wisdom there and a lot of people have found it useful for a long time. Unfortunately, some of the best wisdom becomes a cliche` and nobody really puts it to use. We all need to see the funny side of things. Maybe we need to search out the joke of the day, go to a comedy club, or just find the humor all around us.

The science of it says that laughter may do as much good as exercise in keeping us healthy. Now that may get your attention. You also may get a good laugh there. This is for real. Laughter creates chemicals that work on the body and mind in very positive ways. Laughter is easier than the workout, but you do need both.

Laughter is supposed to be the “glue that holds marriages together”. Laughter helps people work together. Most people like to laugh and feel they are having fun when there is laughter. Many dating sites ask for a “man with a sense of humor”. Women want to laugh and they like men who make them laugh. I think I believe the saying, ” a little nonsense is relished by the wisest men”.

Besides paid entertainment, how do we find laughter? Well, a playful spirit and a social group is the usual setting. Most laughter occurs in response to a normal life conversation or situation. Notice, on the social media sites the best and earliest abbreviations are for laughing, LOL, LMAO, and ROFLMAO. The virtual community is a good place for a laughs and real good laughs. I have laughed out loud, but I have not rolled on the floor, but I did have a sister who would tell stories and roll on the floor and had a hard time finishing the story. Which is not unusal, the person talking laughs more than the ones listening.

There are all kinds of humor, but most humor seems to be innate and common to all humans and occurs from babyhood on and in all people. Sadly, many of us lose our “playful” spirit just when we need it most. I am too much a “dry bones type” but I am going to work on the playful spirit more. Maybe , we could all work harder on seeing the humor that is all around us and make a conscious effort to bring some humor to any situation.

  1. Liked it Rose,
The expression ” broken spirit dries the bones ” touches the heart !
We have a number of laughter clubs in India ,which are a great success. Artificially simulated laughter helps a person equally well !

    1. We have dozens of laughter clubs here as well ,and I have attended one meeting once . Laughter it’s contagious ! So it doesn’t matter how you start laughing ,you may start artificially but by the end the laughter it’s real ! and the benefits almost instant ! It helps if you have a good laughter coach !lol
      This lady was fabulous !

    2. Thank you for your comment, abhilaaj. Forced laughter is supposed to help. We call them comedy clubs and we don’t have that many. I only know of one here.
      We could do with more.

    1. Lani, ty for your comment and you are lucky to be a “giggler”. It is very good for you. You might just have a very good sense of humor, and many people have a poor one.

  2. I’m not sure about forced laughter, I think humour is a inbuilt attribute, to be able to see humour in things,, and laugh easily, is in my opinion not something that can be taught, it has to come naturally, you either find things funny or you don’t …..now if you are lucky enough to know someone who has an infectious laugh, for no reason whatsoever you will just end up laughing at their laugh ………..giggle groups I have never heard off, sound like fun…….I think a good belly laugh is the best therapy ever………xx

  3. Starletteyou have figured it all out except they are sayingany kind of laugh is good.I had never heard of a laugh coach but nmod mentioned it and maybe she is having a big laugh, but I can see where people could use some help.

    1. No,Rose I’m not joking …it’s true ! It’s not about comedy or jokes ,it’s an exercise . Read below a bit of how all started 🙂

      Laughter Clubs Victoria Inc
Is run along the lines established by Indian Physician Dr Madan Kataria, who founded the global laughter movement in 1995 with five people in an Indian park and now there are over years ago with one club, and there are now over 6,000 clubs in 60 countries worldwide.
Is an incorporated not-for-profit organisation, run by a volunteer committee of management. Laughter Clubs Victoria Inc was founded in 2002 when Laughter Teacher Phillipa Challis encouraged four other like minded laughter lovers to form the first committee of management and begin the Laughter Clubs Victoria Inc journey.
In the last year we have grown from 30 community clubs to 41, as the message of regular laughter and knowledge that ‘laughter is the best medicine’ spreads throughout Melbourne and around Victoria. Truly, Community Laughter Clubs are for people of all ages and walks of life who want to have fun and laugh in a group, and there is no charge to you, the public. Well, that is not entirely true. We charge you with the ability to laugh and dare you to come and join us and have fun.
Trained Laughter Leaders run the Community Clubs and we all give our time to share laughter with people who want to laugh for no reason and gain the health benefits of laughter.
There are also a number of trained leaders who take laughter into their workplaces. Laughter Clubs Victoria present authorised Laughter Leader Training workshops four times a year and they are open to anybody who chooses to have more laughter in their lives and even start a laughter club of your own..
If you are interested in spreading the word about the benefits of laughter contact our LCVi President Mahes or our Secretary Jenny or send an email to [email protected] .
The clubs listed on our website are led by trained Laughter Leaders and as required by shires and councils in Victoria, Laughter Clubs Victoria holds Public Liability insurance.
We all know how to laugh and when you join in a community laughter club session you will be laughing out loud right from the first time! Our body knows how to laugh – it’s about enjoying the activity and allowing the laughter to flow.

      1. nmod. Thank you very, very much. I e-mailed for info, and googled for clubs but so far all the sites were selling a tape.
In America, not much is free, but I wish I did have one of your laughter clubs here. WE do need them.

  4. Humor seems to run in our family, rose… my mother’s side of the family. We have quite a few comedians. It is so much fun to laugh. Laughter is the best medicine… indeed. Thanks for the blog. 😆

  5. Sorry Rose to say that, we have no laughter clubs here in Germany. The reason for this seems to be quite simple; we don’t have anything to laugh about.
Germans have to play a dominant role in Europe again! Greece in the south, Russia and Ukraine in the east are enough reason to think about the future very seriously. Sorry.

    1. Michael, you made me laugh. Are you really serious? Many Americans are part German, and so am I. Laughter actually helps you work and live together. It really does. Are you just kidding?

    2. von Michael!
At last you made me laugh. I’m in fits of laughter!!! The reason and I quote ” Germans have to play a dominant role in Europe again” I would love to comment more but I just wetted my shorts laughing.

  6. Rose,
On a rather serious note though, let me share a quotation of Acharya Rajneesh the renowned Indian philosopher on laughter :
Laughter brings you to reality as it is. The world is a play of God, a cosmic joke.
And unless you understand it as a cosmic joke you will never be able to understand the ultimate mystery.

  7. Hi Rose, hi Dave,

the role Germany is playing in Europe now is nothing else than laughter. The Greeks don’t need to go to a laughter club neither the Russian. Only the Ukrainians, the Ukrainians have no, not laughter clubs, tear clubs are in fashion now.

And the story nMod tells makes me laugh cos Australia is out of reach from good and bad and as far as I know this country can be compared with a paradise island, which I can’t commit!

But you blog and the answer I find here explain why my friend Ann receives in mustrelation to others so little applause by so many members on SC. Most of them have forgotten where in their body the laughter button is??

NB. I’m very serious indeed and I’m not kidding cos the whole world is laughing about Germans politicians and the politics produced by them. But don’t lets commentate politics it would be a waste of time. I’m not joking in on that point, really not it is just said with tongue in cheek of course. xxM

  8. Sorry for the mistakes in my text but Microsoft has just updated the system!! I’ll try again.

  9. Michael. I missed one of your best lines which describes the problem exactly. “Most have forgotten where the laughter button is”. Like other thing, if you don’t use it, you lose it. And I agree with you totally. You always have an original way of saying things.
