Inconsistency

Not sure how to start this blog except to say I have ( or someone else has with me) a problem. I attended the quiz tonight as I always do on Mondays. Its always been a laugh and insightful. But tonight it was inconsistent to put it mildly. For anybody who doesn’t do the quiz. A sequence of letters are put up and you make a sentence from them. Then there are three rounds of guess the category. Five or six clues are put up. The first one tonight, the answer was Boris Karloff. The winner got it with Boris, ok. The second one we couldn’t get and was told it was a particular word we needed. Human was put up and dismissed. Things bigger than human was excepted, the full answer. I enquired why this was accepted with the full answer when the last one was not. Just told that was the answer, ok. By this time I was a little annoyed. The next set of letters came out and my mind would not work properly, so I didn’t put a sentence up. Normally when that happens the quizmaster will check why and if you intend to put a sentence up, but not a word, ok. Third round, clues. The answer was something to do with eyes. The winner put eys and even though two lines after someone else put the correct answer it was given to eys…………………. I must stress that only the second answer that was ignored was mine and I have no problem with the people who gave the other answers. They are just players, there to enjoy the game. I wanted to say something afterwards but everybody went their seperate ways. So this is the only way I know off to make my feelings known.
I felt very angry, because one of the things I dislike most in life is unfairness or inconsistency as I have called it above. It made me feel like the quizmaster had some dislike towards me, but that is probably my anger. I hope so anyway. I certainly don’t want to come across as a bad looser as that is not me at all. I don’t feel that I will enjoy doing the quiz again though which is sad, because I have always really enjoyed it. To those off you who don’t go to the quiz this will all probably seem like gobbledegook. But it has made me feel really sad tonight. I wish I could say something witty or amusing like usual but its beyond me at the moment.

  1. It just a game of fun, the rules are a little flexible pending if anyone gets close. No one wins a real prize. It is meant to have people gather and laugh. That is the real winning. Joining people, seeing what looney things they write. It is not to be taken seriously. Sorry that it was not as rule driven as you would like. There are competitive games in groups you might like better. I have played this game many times. Each time is a little different pending who shows up. There were nights that no one got close and the rules were stretched so we didn’t spend all night trying to guess. There were a few times I acted as hostess and until you try to put the letters in, keep up with everyone typing in comments, and keeping score, you don’t realize how hard it is to keep things straight. Hope you come again, knowing the fun is playing the game…winning is not meant to be a big deal. I heard the winner got the prize of taking a guest to the airport back room to be interogated. lol The game chat is there for anyone who wants to start a game of some kind. Please feel free to introduce one. I am sure others will enjoy playing along. Blessings.. Linda

      1. I meant to say I am the easiest going, least competative person I know. My friends and family would howl with laughter if they read that. The prize is the biggest laugh of all. I now think I should have used paragraphs in my blog. It might have helped you understand it from my side of the fence Linda.

    1. Something to think about. Maybe someone would like to introduce something new. Some may be getting bored w/ this one. Any ideas are welcome and of course anyone can host. Been thinking about doing another game in the afternoon which might work better for those in the UK – if I only had the same day off every week..lol.. but maybe it’s time to change things up..

  2. Blinker I attended the game today, firstly I think you have to admit that the room is changed,if chalk is like me only 9 lines are vissable and everyone posting comments it was harder to read them.I didn’t post one lot of sentences either, as I got a visitor in the middle of the game,he didn’t enquire of me either.I took it as too hard in the room to really see who had posted or who hadn’t.
Secondly things appear on your computer different to chalks, seen it in many quizzes .yours often comes in split second after the other on his computer.
Sorry you felt hurt ,i had to go off as needed to get some things done sorry.

    1. Good point about the diff screens and things appearing at diff times.. I have questioned about that before also and then saw for myself how true it is when I hosted. Thanks, Mac.

  3. @Linda . What do you mean, “No real prize” !!
If there is no real prize, why did Kate take me to the back room and laugh hysterically while she watch her henchmen beat me with dead fish!!!?
Something smells very squiddish about this picture. šŸ˜‰

  4. Unbelievable! First of all, let’s address the point that this was the only way you had to make your feelings known. That’s absolutely false and you know it. You could have messaged Chalk privately and he would’ve addressed your concerns privately, but you chose this route, so please don’t be surprised that this is all aired publicly.. YOUR choice. You have NO idea how difficult it is to host this game and Chalk does it out of the goodness of his heart to help bring some FUN into the site. He gets no compensation whatsoever. I do know just how difficult it is as I have subbed for him several times. As this has grown in number from week to week it becomes increasingly difficult to keep the sentences straight, who answered and whether or not people have left the room and come back.. This is NOT a professional game w/ professional hosts. We are just doing our best to have a nice, lighthearted time w/ a few laughs. The sentences do not determine the winner (as Chalk and I have both explained to you on multiple occasions) because it would be an entirely subjective measurement and a tedious process. We have to rely on bonus rounds for that. You have no idea how difficult it is some weeks to even show up, as Chalk works a full time job and often has to scramble after work at the last minute to come up with categories that are fresh and interesting and fun! I work two jobs and lately can’t make it at all but when I do I appreciate the time and effort he puts into it. He doesn’t just go thru the motions but jokes throughout, puts out his own sentences for fun and is a fantastic host! Whatever happened at the game had nothing to do with you and for you to make it personal is ridiculous. You are completely insensitive to write this blog and to complain about something that is a gift to you from one of the very kind members on this site. You have every right to have hurt feelings but to handle it this way, by dissing Chalk, is wrong. You should’ve asked your questions in private. To those of you who appreciate the game, thank you for your support and encouragement. Everyone is welcome, including you Blinker, but if you have nothing positive to contribute maybe it would be best if you don’t return.

    1. Why are my feelings less important than chalks? And why are you attacking me for having them. You have done some good quiz’s Millie and we have always thanked you for them. As you say you wern’t there so to come out with this tirade at me is totally out of order. I asked chalk that night and he just dismissed me out of turn. That wasn’t fun for me. Would it have been for you?

      1. What’s out of order is your public complaint about something that was meant as a gift and as fun. I am not familiar w/ passive/aggressive attacks and tactics, so I confront head on. If you do not like it you should not have tried to publicly embarrass Chalk. Next time maybe u will keep your private matters just that.

        1. The thing is chalk an aweful lot of good folk have left this chat its easy to say am using the blame and victim attitude but am sorry m8 time will prove me right try looking up those who have bowed out and anyway chalk bet u never had a death threat huh thats just how bad it got with me as for millie i used to think she was ok but she seems to have a wee fly kick at me as well ach av had enough u all have won i wont comment again got better things to do good luck blinks i like u a lot take care and god bless

  5. This wonderful word game, which Chalk so graciously hosts, (as well as Millie and Linda, on occasion) is one of the highlights of the week for many. We all have an opportunity to gather together, and enjoy good, lighthearted game playing, with lots of laughs and great companionship. This is hosted by three of the nicest people on this site, who have always, always hosted fairly. Hosting a game in the chat room is a very difficult thing to do. (I have hosted a trivia-type game on occasion in the past, and I can tell you, it is indeed, difficult.) There are so many people writing out answers, so very quickly, that it’s difficult to follow at times. That being said, what I have witnessed while in the word game room, is that those who host these word games, have always carefully taken time to look at all answers on the screen, scrolling back to check if necessary, and have been completely been unbiased in who they award correct answers to. In addition to that, it’s important to note, that just because your answer may show up on your screen before the other answers that were awarded, that may not be the case for the person who is hosting the game. It must always be taken into account, that these answers may pop up on the host’s screen a split second before or after the other player’s screens across the country, or around the world. That’s the way it is on any site you may be on, playing these types of fast moving games. I also want to point out, that hosting these games is very time consuming for the host, well before the game even starts. The hosts spend a good amount of time compiling the content for the game. All of this is done out of the goodness of their heart, in truly wanting to do something nice for others. It’s precisely this type of kind person, who would never be unfair in any way, to another player.

    1. Thanks for your sweet words about us, Kate.. That was thoughtful and it’s nice to be appreciated. We honestly do not do it for praise or even the appreciation, it’s all just about fun. But, your kind expression helps. Thank you. šŸ˜›

  6. Blinker, I have been hosting this game for over 14 months and I’ve heard from people who want the game to go slower, others want it to go faster. Because of this, I’ve tried to keep the game running in such a way that it’s done in one hour. I have tried in earnest to accommodate everyone, but some nights I have to keep the game moving because some folks, including me, have other obligations to attend to after the game is over. Some nights I’ll give extra time, some nights I won’t. Not going to apologize for that. I’m as fair as I possibly can be.

In between rounds, I’m getting the letters for the next round and trying to have some fun of my own, so is it possible that I might miss something along the way? Yep. I should be boiled in oil for that, or at the very least, publicly outed in a blog for my crimes against humanity!! Oh the sheer torture of it all, having to play a word game in such conditions!! šŸ™‚

I can assure you, when it comes to Acronymia, everyone has the exact same chance to win as anyone else.

    1. Yeh chalk. Your this wonderful monument to society in general. You can hardly say you missed something when I told it specifically to you and you answered with an I don’t give a s**t answer. Is it cos i’s English? There must be some reason you find it impossible to be polite to me.

      1. Wow… just wow. It’s a game!!! You’ve totally misconstrued things to suit yourself so all I’ll say at this point is I do the best I can and if that’s not good enough for you, perhaps you can find another game that is more to your liking.

You asked me what the winning answer was, and I told you. I wasn’t disparaging nor was I rude in any way but apparently that’s how you decided to take it. There were nine other people in the room who can vouch for that. That was the extent of the conversation. You say that you specifically pointed it out, well I never saw another word from you about it on my screen. From here out, I’ll be saving the transcripts of the game.

Bottom line is that I created this game as a really simple game for fun. Don’t blame me for things out of my control. I don’t control the chat room nor the software. If things get lost in the shuffle, all I have to go by is my screen.

  7. Thanks katelin, You are one of the sweetest people I know on here and I have always enjoyed the fun, party aspect of the quiz until last night. Maybe chalk was having an off night I don’t know. When you say he is precisely the kind of person who couldn’t do that I can’t help thinking about news stories where you hear that all the time because other people words are dismissed.

  8. Wow! I just read this and am shocked how you blinker or anyone for that matter could say this. it is a game! How in the world can one be “angered”? I’m lost as to how such a fun harmless “game” can anger you blinker. I don’t go to game much these days but it’s my schedule conflict. When I did or do go I have a blast. Maybe I should sue Chalk b/c I never won a prize lol. Blinker you could have handled this in pvt with Chalk or Millie without this. That would be the adult mature thing to do. I’m still baffled as to how a chat game can anger someone. Anyway, I commend Chalk for the contribution he he and so many others her make to entertain and share with others. Blink you were way off base addressing this thru a blog making a false charge to good people who devote their time without compensation to provide fun for others. Thank you Chalk and Millie and who ever else I didn’t mention for the game. Please don’t let this discourage you. “J”

  9. I just want to say chalk that I kicked my toe this morning and its all your fault lol Just saying!! Thanks for doing the games , I have been in a few times. Thanks for giving up your time. xoxox

  10. Well it looks like my feelings and opinion has opened a hornets nest and anyone who agrees is getting stung. Sorry Padraig.
I do believe that opinions are not just for people who have been on the site for years.
I also believe that anyone who has to resort to the shape up or ship out attitude has lost the discussion and their credibility. It solves nothing and proves more than anything these people believe they are superior. And there longevity on site gives them the right to dismiss new members.
This will be my last comment on the subject, so goodnight and happy dreaming.

  11. Superiority has nothing to do with it… neither does longevity. Wrong is wrong in anyone’s book, and you were simply wrong. You’ve been shown various examples and had several people attest to what goes on in the game room when you’re hosting. Now that you do know, the right thing to do (in order for YOU to perhaps gain back some credibility) would be to publicly apologize to Chalk since you were the one who decided to air all of this. When you write anything in a blog you run the risk of having people vehemently disagree w/ you, and that is what happened here. No one is trying to run you out of anywhere, but if you’re going to be here you may as well know what to expect. Some people will defend those who are wrongly accused of something. That’s called loyalty. Sweet dreams to you as well..

  12. Thanks to everyone who has supported me in this blog and this silly little Acronymia game I’ve created. I know most of you have a great time with it and I appreciate all the thank-yous.

No, it’s not an easy thing to do to host a game on this site but the joy it brings folks makes the effort worthwhile. I’d like to especially thank Millie because she was a part of the creation process of this game and she’s bailed me out on numerous occasions when I needed a stand-in to host the game.

  13. OMG!!!! It is happening again! Please Chalk, Millie, and Linda don’t ever throw your hat in the ring. For the last year soo many nice people have left the site with no one filling their shoes. ie: Sophie. Thank you for the personal time and effort the three of you have put into this site. I have enjoyed it soooo much!!!!! Please don’t let one person’s opinion ruin a really good thing!!!!! xx

  14. Wow…. glad that is over. Now we can all enjoy groups or games that suit our particular competitive nature. I never do the group work game..cause they won’t let me steal other people’s words and they don’t like my speling. lol
    How about a group hug?

  15. group ((((((((hug))))))) linda. You millie and chalk have worked very hard for SC and have done great stuff, I have one wonky hand and can’t keep up in games, only reason I am not there or in chat very often. Lots of members do a great deal for SC. Blink I also validate how you feel xxx Please chatters could we not find a way to settle our differences and not hurt others feelings. Maybe if we are feeling hurt a private message may be able to sort stuff, love to you all xxx

  16. Your blog, blinker1, was pointed out to me late y’day eve. A professor once commented when I was in graduate school that university faculty fight over trivia because they have nothing of real importance to fight about. Just the sort of cynical sarcasm I find so delicious. Your blog made me think of that. Had I known you were going to bore us about Boris and the other injustices heaped on you I would have really needled you unmercifully during the game. Please Chalk and Millie and Linda you collectively provide such fun and diversion on SC, oh please don’t be put off by one carping voice. All seriousness aside, I thought resident curmudgeon was my role; that grumbling, stewing, fussing and spite were reserved to me. Now, dang it, here’s someone trying to upstage me! Anyway, ’tis early and I’m going back to bed. Meanwhile blinker1, as we used to say in the U.S. Coast Guard, you may take your “T.S.” card to the chaplain and have it punched. Other than that, have an “awesome” day. (Sheesh, I know I will be sorry I wrote this.) OB

  17. Now, I really hadnt planned on responding, thought it over and thought it best that I not…but now you have gone and done it OB!!! LOL…soon as I get back from getting my dictionary that is…you do have a way of increasing my vocabulary.

    Definition of curmudgeon (n)
    Bing Dictionary
    curĀ·mudgĀ·eon
    [ kur mĆŗjjən ]
1.somebody who is irritable or stubborn: somebody considered to be bad-tempered, disagreeable, or stubborn

Awwww, had I not noticed, your reputation as a “charmer” has been tarnished? Oh my…I guess you are a Charming Curmudgeon! Please dont ever change…no matter what the response to your blog commentary.

As with most things on SC, there has to be openness, compromise, consideration, a place to vent, and all must remember ONE SIZE FITS ALL doesnt alway work. In fact, in most cases it doesnt. Some would prefer a private message, other would say it should have been in the blog. Sometimes people should simply leave chat for a little while. Sometimes chatters should remember this is suppose to fun and enjoyable! Its NOT suppose to be perfect. It is suppose to make us stop and think. Sometimes its okay to be upset, angry and voice it – in a respectful manner. We all should remember that it takes times for chatters to provide us fun and enjoyment and make us laugh. I know when I did the soap opera, I had no idea until I actually did it about how much time it consumed! It was great fun, but it was work nonetheless. Remembering chatters who give from the heart for our enjoyment is paramount. Have I been offended on SC, have I been angry – OF COURSE! I live, I breathe…lol… Enjoy the “spice of life” of SC! I have felt down the past couple days about some health issues…rejoice, find happiness because you can get pissed, you can be feisty, you can laugh at yourself when need be. Enjoy that you give enough of a damn to respond to a blog!

OB, I think your curmudgeon role is safe and sound – have no fear! Twould take a great chatter to fill those obstenate, gruff, comical, charming shoes of yours! Oh hell, why did I say that…I just know his head just grew! LOL…

Maybe I will come and play the game again one night…HS

  18. Did I write “Boris?” I just realized (rare moment of clarity) that all along I meant “Borax.” The correct answer was apparently Boris Karloff; whom I’ve never even heard of. So I guess I should not have won that first round on categories. And “eys???” Well that is just inexcoosable. If one can’t spell, one should be disquillified. Just sayin’. (If I was sorry I wrote my initial reply, I am gonna be really sorry I wrote this one.)

  19. Oh gee Oldbull you just sentenced me to a life of misery. No more games in games room ,as my spelling is gremlinified, thought you were my friend, finished it now for me.

  20. Hey Mac, didn’t we say ALL are welcome? Bring us your tired, your cranky (aka curmudgeons) , your misspellers (even Linda. lol), and those who get company and have to leave in the middle of the game, all who want to have a go at the word game.. any time. And OB, I’m not sorry you wrote that.. gave me a good laugh šŸ™‚ See you all next time in the game room!
P.S. Hope u make it again soon, HS šŸ™‚

  21. Well I just want to say thanks Chalk and Millie for the time and effort you put into making the game fun,and all the ones that attend .I personally love it and get mad when i get visitors or phone calls on Tuesday at game time.Blinker hope you get over your feelings of upset, and come back enjoy the game as it is meant to be FUN.Would put a smily face on if I could xxxx mac

  22. I am sure your quiz is wonderful Chalkoutline – I have never had the opportunity to take part because of the time difference but I do acknowledge and appreciate the time you take to prepare for your quiz.
I too run a quiz on Tuesday evening. Laughter, fun and any other forms of enjoyment are banned. Anyone who takes the quiz seriously is also banned. I even ban myself at times….. It is a very short and quiet quiz – but the prizes are spectacular for those who dare to partake in a little cerebral exercise.

Blinker, you write ‘ Is it cos iā€™s English?’ The answer will be a resounding NO, I too am from England and yet I retain a sense of irony and humour. I also have an appreciation for those who give their time freely to provide entertainment and amusement for others on this site.
